When I see these news, I always ask myself: Where is the father? Why not leave the child or children with their father? Anyway, read on.
A mother named, Dineshia Yates, has gone to jail because her three-year-old daughter, Blessing Buckles, was beaten to death while Yates was out gambling. Yates left eight children, ranging from 11 months to 12 years old, alone at their home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on February 12 of last year. She was with her friend, Terica Scott, at a casino when the tragic event happened.
Blessing was reportedly attacked by Scott's 10-year-old son and 12-year-old nephew. She suffered a serious brain injury and sadly passed away two days later.
Yates, who is 27, admitted to manslaughter (unintentionally causing death) and child cruelty. She already had a criminal record for previous theft. On Thursday, April 17th, she was sentenced to only 18 months in prison.
Scott denies the same charges and will go to court on May 5th. Her son and nephew are facing charges of battery and second-degree murder.
One of the children at home called for help after Blessing was injured. When the police arrived, no adults were there. Yates and Scott were arrested when they eventually returned and admitted they had been at a casino.
Scott told the police that she knew her nephew had been violent with other children before. Yates said she had seen bruises on at least one of her daughters after they were left alone with him. However, according to police records, she "ignored her children's pleas for help."
Yates and her children were staying with Scott and her family at the time. They told the police that they often left all eight children, including a baby, unsupervised to go gambling. The two women were described as close friends by local news.
During the court hearing on Thursday, Yates' past crimes were mentioned. In 2017, she was convicted of stealing clothes from a store and items from someone's house. In 2020, she also reportedly threw a brick through a woman's car window.
After the sentencing, Sheriff Sid Gautreaux of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office expressed his sadness, calling it a "devastating" case. He urged people to immediately contact law enforcement if they know of any child abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Scott's court appearance is scheduled for next month.
