A happy day turned into a tragedy for a 6-year-old boy and his father during a fishing trip in Virginia. According to investigators, the boy fell into the water after losing his balance, and his father drowned while trying to save him.
This incident occurred on Saturday, March 22, at a boat landing by the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia. The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office shared the details in a news release on April 2.
The sheriff's office expressed their sadness, saying, "What should have been a wonderful memory for a father and son turned into a tragedy." Danny Sumner's wife became worried when they hadn't returned by 9:45 PM, so she contacted the sheriff’s office. The deputies found Danny's vehicle and his cell phone at the river dock.
A dive team was called to search the area and eventually found both Danny and his son, Donovan. Authorities determined there was no foul play involved. They believe that Donovan had just caught a fish when he fell off the dock into the river, and Danny jumped in to help him but tragically drowned.
An obituary for the two explains that they were “inseparable” and that their souls left this world together.
